These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things
Looking back at 2021, we completed so many beautiful mosaic installations across the globe. From joyful elephants, to pool-inspired lobbies, to deeply personal designs, we did it all. So it begs us to ask ourselves – what were our favorite installations this year?
It’s so hard to choose just one. It’s like asking us to pick a favorite child – they are all so very different, but all so loved. It’s like asking someone their favorite song or album or band…it’s impossible, because it all depends on the when and the where and the what and the why. You enjoy different music at different times for different occasions and reasons, just as you enjoy the beautiful mosaic art work used in different applications and in different environments.
But with that being said…
Ted Acworth – Founder & CEO
Mood Independência Apartment Complex, Passo Fundo, Brazil
“The large urban scale of this installation is so impressive. Looking at a skyscraper clad in mosaic in a city skyline view is just awesome. It is one of the larger projects we’ve undertaken but it’s actually not a lot of square feet. You think it’s a large expensive project, it looks like 10,000 square feet, but it’s actually only 3,000 and it’s so clever how it was developed. They chose a very affordable tile material, our Glazed Porcelain, and could use large tiles and so all in all an extremely cost effective solution with an outsized impact.
Also, I love the subject matter – it’s about freedom and independence conveyed through the American and French icons. Now, more than ever, democracy and freedoms need to be celebrated. What a bold vision on the part of MML Real Estate Development! For them to choose such a universal theme of democracy and to do it larger than life in their city. This could have been just another cookie cutter building, but instead it’s likely going to become an iconic building in Passo Fundo. That is not because it is clad in tile but because of the iconic imagery – the tile is just the functional enabler. If I lived in that part of Brazil, I would definitely want to live in that building.”
Caroline Dobrowski
LinkedIn Corporate Office, Chicago, IL
“Our collaboration with Gensler for LinkedIn’s Chicago Corporate Office, along with so many others in development with them, are always some of my favorites. Working with Gensler and their talented design and architecture teams across the country is always a wonderful experience. We appreciate our continued and growing relationship with such a design powerhouse. Looking forward to seeing so many other beautiful mosaics installed in 2022.”
Lu Dubois – National Account Manager
Vertex Pharmaceuticals HQ, Boston, MA
“Vertex continues to have a large presence in the Boston area and the pharmaceutical industry globally. It’s always an honor to work with Theron Wallis, corporate brand and creative director for Vertex, on this and the several other mosaics we have created for them over the years. Each image is always a specific nod to one of their pharmaceuticals, or in this case an abstract of the DNA sequence. Using our Vitreous Glass, this design is a truly fitting mosaic during these times.”
Laurel Palmer – Commercial Sales Manager
The Chamberlain, Corpus Christi, TX
“The Chamberlain was one of my favorite projects last year in our Natural Stone. Our hand-cut mosaics are stunning; showing off both our design and fabrication capabilities. The historic building was reimagined and revitalized with beautiful details including our welcoming mosaics!”
Ariel Schuster – Sales & Design Consultant
Naples Residence, Naples, FL
“The Naples Residence Waterfall Wall and Pool is my favorite installation of the year for a few reasons. While it is a simple design, it is stunning, dynamic and timeless. This ombre gradient features 100% opalescent tiles which play with the natural light and refracted light from the water gorgeously – making it perfect for a pool application. Additionally we were able to turn around this 1,300 square foot 3/4″ Vitreous Glass mosaic quickly, in a mere 6 weeks, to meet the clients installation deadlines.”
Sasha Mulcahey – Sales & Marketing Manager
The Curtis Hotel, Denver, CO
“I chose The Curtis Hotel in Denver, CO because who doesn’t love a good pool bar? Denver is like a second home to me and I’m excited to be able to see this installation in person when I travel there for my birthday next year. It also feels like a fun vacation in the middle of Denver with the relaxed vibes and color palette in our Glazed Porcelain. Just need that mai tai and it’s a perfect chill spot.”
Kiva Reinbold – Project Services Manager
Roadrunner on McDowell, Scottsdale, AZ
“My favorite is the Roadrunner on McDowell apartment complex. It’s in my home state of Arizona, so I’m biased, but I also love the use of Kaleido from the Verge Collection in our Glazed Porcelain and the mid-century vibe.”
Kait Paradowski – Design Director
Kipling Station Bus Terminal, Toronto, Canada
“My favorite project of the year is the Kipling Station Bus Terminal. I love how this installation inspires engagement and celebrates a community’s identity. Hughes’ innovative take on the City of Toronto translates so beautifully into a mosaic utilizing our 3/4″ Vitreous Glass tile.
The varied mosaics sprinkled throughout bring a sense of wonder to the space – there is something exciting hiding behind every turn you may take! A perfect ‘homecoming’ to those returning to their city by way of bus.”
Sloan Conners – Sales & Design Assistant
Rosé Truck, Michigan City, IN
“As a wine and dog enthusiast, this mosaic encapsulates all of my favorite things! This hand cut mosaic is stunningly executed in Artaic’s Natural Stone showcasing a sophisticated color palette in a luxurious and adorable fashion. Elegance, rose, and pups – what else could you ever want?”
Natalia Gordon – Sales & Marketing Assistant
Driscoll Children’s Hospital, Corpus Christi, TX
“Every time I see this mosaic, it puts a smile on my face. I can imagine the little bit of joy this design brings patients and visitors at Driscoll Children’s Hospital and love that we were able to accomplish that with an Artaic mosaic. I love the soothing color palette chosen from our Vitreous Glass that transforms the space from simply a hospital lobby, but in to so much more.”
