A Spa in the Middle of the Desert? It's Actually a $500,000 Bathroom

The owners enlisted an interior designer to create a nature-infused luxury retreat inside their Arizona home
For Bob and Lisa Moran, the best views don’t always require packing a suitcase. Bob, 75, is a former chairman and CEO of PetSmart, and Lisa is a former hairstylist who loves mountain biking in the Sonoran Desert surrounding the couple’s home in Paradise Valley, Ariz.
When the Morans purchased their house for $3.2 million in 2018, they wanted the local flora and skies reflected in their space-and, in particular, the 510-square-foot primary bathroom they inherited. It was covered in slippery, large porcelain tile and lit by an oddly shaped half-moon window that let in little light and served no real Durpose.
“We wanted the bathroom to feel like a spa retreat that brings the outside in-natural stone and wood, abundant light, an open layout,” says Lisa, 48. “A place where you would want to linger, unhurried, like being out in nature.”
The Morans hired interior designer Jennifer Beget of J Beget Designs. Beget-who partnered with Lortie Construction-layered the bathroom with tactile, light-catching materials: gold-embossed vinyl wallcoverings by French company Elitis, shell-lined vanity walls, and a crystal agate window that filters light through its honeyed creams, tans and warm-brown veining.
