My oh my, what a time to be inside!
We are living in unprecedented times, to say the least. With the cold and grey of the Winter months behind us, and Summertime just around the corner everyone is itching to get outside and enjoy nature – enter our villain, quarantine. Fortunately, pandemics and bad weather don’t need to deprive us of the great outdoors – enter our hero, Biophilia!
2019 was a huge year in design for Biophilia, which, simply put is humanity’s innate need to connect with nature. In 2020, now more than ever it has become increasingly important to incorporate the outside into our interiors, creating happier and healthier environments. Not to mention, by using materials like tile in your custom mosaic, you are creating a space that is hygienic and easy to keep clean. Your home has quickly become your office, your school, and your local watering hole – I mean, your ONLY watering hole – so why not make it your woodside cabin and coastal cabana as well?
Below are four key elements found within Biophilia.
1) Visual Connection to Nature : Everyone wants their room full of natural light with a spectacular view, but as the saying goes expectations are not always a reality. Luckily, when we design our spaces we can “fake it”, visually staging elements of the outside world where they may be lacking in our homes.
2) Non-Visual Connection to Nature: Biophilia does not simply mean plant life and landscapes, there are patterns found in nature that instill a sense of the outdoors in your space that may suit the aesthetic of a more modern or contemporary home. Faux-bois, the artistic interpretation of wood grain, made for a fabulous mosaic rendering – and just think of all of the colorways you could play around with to make it your own!
3) Presence of Water: There are great benefits to having a water feature in the home; moving water creates negative ionization which is known to be a physiological stimulant. Having a water feature in your home, however, is not always realistic. Luckily there are ways to receive those same benefits for a better price and less hassle! In fact, we created an entire design collection around this idea, SPLASH!
4) Biomorphic Forms & Patterns: Bringing shapes and patterns into the home that are not literal translations of nature is a more subtle way to create a Biophilic atmosphere. Leopard print, anyone?
Now more than ever we are realizing just how important It is to create environments that promote peace, productivity, and power. One sure-fire way to stave of cabin-fever is to revamp the cabin, and we are here to help!
