Crowdsourced Design
At the intersections of digital and physical, art and technology, Artaic continually stretches the bounds of what can be designed in tile. Through the “Design ‘N Gather” (DNG) competition, we designers from all backgrounds to do the same.
For the 2014 DNG competition, Artaic worked with MassChallenge and architecture firm, Analogue Studio to provide contestants with a blank wall to design for. Artaic collaborated with Analog Studio to develop design specifications for the mural including tile material, color palette, and overall design intent.
Given the specification and design tools, contestants created unique artwork for the space which was submitted for the opportunity to be produced by Artaic and permanently installed in MassChallange’s start-up incubator space in Boston.
THE Winning Design was Produced BY ARTAIC and PERMANENTLY installed
Through a blind judging process, Jillian Welenc’s “Anatomy of an Idea” was selected as the mosaic that best represented the architecture of the space, characteristics of the MassChallenge brand, and the qualities of Boston’s Innovation District.
Upon selection, the 200 square foot glass mosaic of Welenc’s design was produced in two days by Artaic and installed by Port Morris Tile and Stone with Bostik grout and adhesives.
The winning mosaic, along with the other finalists were unveiled during an award ceremony that took place in MassChallenge’s event space.
“As a 2011 MassChallange finalist, Artaic is a prime example of the unique companies we help foster in our program. Having a mosaic in our space that they produced – especially one designed in such a unique way – can be an inspiration for everyone who comes through.”
– John Harthorn, Founder & CEO, MassChallange
Artaic owes much to the Boston design & innovation community. It’s great to be able to give back with this competition and resulting mosaic.
