Collaboration is at the heart of innovation – especially when it happens across a range of media and backgrounds.
Combining their varied expertise, unique skillsets, and creative vision, Artaic, Ayre Lighting, and Bostik developed Ayrtaik for the Innovation Pavilion at Architecture Boston Expo (ABX) 2014. Ayrtaik is a sculptural work of lighting art that combines architectural forms and backlit tile surfaces. The forms and mosaic imagery play off each other to create an experience that is unlike any other. Ayrtaik is a playful piece that transforms as you move around it – changing with every different perspective – a true testament to the spirit of collaboration.

Collaborative Design & Conceptualization
Artaic, Ayre and Bostik lead their respective categories with forward-reaching products, materials, and processes. Artaic uses unique software and robotic technology to envision and produce custom architectural tile, Ayre Lighting Group develops custom energy efficient lighting solutions, and Bostik is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of adhesives and sealants.
Combining their varied expertise, unique skill sets, and creative vision, they developed a unique piece of functional artwork that changes when viewed from different perspectives. The design transforms from an abstract tile pattern to an artistic depiction of eyes when observed from a vantage point marked on the ground.
CUSTOM FABRICATION PROCESS
After the design was finalized, the mosaic tile sheets were produced using Artaic’s robotic fabrication system.
This project was unique in that instead of a typical flat surface, the mosaic would be wrapped around lanterns. The tile sheets were installed in-house at Artaic’s production space in Boston, MA, using Bostik’s translucent Dimension Grout. The Bostik grout contains micro glass beads and a translucent, urethane binder that both reflect light and allow it to pass through – creating a stunning backlit effect.
The success of the project led to an ongoing collaboration of custom mosaic lighting.
