Mosaic has a rich history that dates thousands of years and is one of the original sustainable products. For centuries, artisans have used stone, pebbles, glass, and even shells to create low-resource, low-maintenance, high-visual-impact mosaic imagery. Mosaic’s inherent durability and sustainability along with its timeless beauty makes it the ultimate choice for sustainable surfaces.
Life Cycle
Tile used in mosaic has an outstanding record of durability and performance, making it one of the most capital-efficient surface finishing materials over time. Unlike other flooring products such as carpet, vinyl, and laminate flooring, glass, and natural stone tile will last the life of the structure, if not longer, with little maintenance or wear.
Recycled Content
Artaic utilizes recycled materials when possible and encourages clients to make sustainable choices. Artaic offers recovered stone and recycled glass tiles in a variety of colors and finishes.
We will prioritize the conservation of natural resources by minimizing waste and maximizing recycling and reuse. We will work to reduce our water usage, source materials from sustainable suppliers, and implement a comprehensive waste management program.
- Artaic performs Quality Control at source factories and doesn’t allow shipping of material we can’t use.
- Three of our product lines (Sintered Glass, Stone, and Felt) are made from completely recycled materials. All the others have recycled content.
Indoor Air Quality
Artaic’s mosaic tile contains zero Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) or other harmful substances, even in the case of fire. In addition, there are GREENGUARD certified adhesives and grouts available that contain zero, or very low VOC’s. The non-porous tile material is antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, does not attract dust or dirt, and does not accumulate moisture, helping to maintain a mold-free environment. Mosaic tiles require very low maintenance and can be cleaned with warm water, eliminating the need for harmful chemicals.
Energy Efficiency
Mosaic tiles have high thermal mass and can store thermal energy to stabilize temperature swings. High thermal mass value maintains cool in hot climates and warmth in cold climates. LED front- and backlights are also an option for illuminating projects, offering a long-lasting, efficient light source highlighting the beauty of Artaic mosaics.
We will invest in energy-efficient technologies and processes to reduce our energy consumption. This includes upgrading to LED lighting, optimizing equipment efficiency, and implementing energy management systems.

Sustainable Product Design
With proprietary precision technology, Artaic is able to manufacture the exact amount of tile needed for the project using our “Print-to-Fit” technique, considerably reducing the amount of time and waste during installation and significantly reducing the impact on our environment.
We will integrate sustainability principles into our product design process. This includes using environmentally friendly materials, designing products for longevity and recyclability, and exploring innovative sustainable design solutions.
- Artaic’s product samples are made on demand, including digital ink print on demand, so that only the samples that our customers need are produced.
- Artaic’s “Print to Fit” project kits are pre-fitted to the installation surface, reducing our shipping footprint and waste of extra unneeded material.
Carbon Reduction
We will set ambitious targets to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. This includes transitioning to renewable energy sources, optimizing transportation logistics to minimize emissions, and incentivizing employees to reduce their carbon footprint.
- Artaic supports alternate sources of clean power. Approximately 10% of Artaic’s annual energy usage is sourced from wind power generated in the US.
Innovation in Design
Artaic exemplifies design innovation by combining disruptive technologies with sophisticated practices to revolutionize the mosaic industry. This art form is made more accessible by reducing labor barriers with mechanization of the fabrication process with robotic assembly systems and Artaic’s proprietary design software, Tylist.™
Continuous Improvement
We will regularly monitor and evaluate our sustainability performance, set new targets for improvement, and communicate transparently with our stakeholders about our progress.
- Artaic contracts with the Greater Boston Manufacturing Partnership (GBMP) to continuously provide Continuous Improvement training to our staff.
Regional Availability
Artaic’s custom mosaics are produced at our facility in Boston, Massachusetts. Installation materials for these mosaics are available to be sourced within 500 miles of our location. This results in low amounts of energy consumption and air emissions when transporting products to any job site in the northeastern United States.
We will engage with our local community to raise awareness about sustainability issues and promote sustainable practices. This includes supporting local environmental initiatives, partnering with schools and universities on educational programs, and encouraging employee volunteerism.
- All of Artaic’s waste tile is offered as donation to local art programs, including Boston Day and Evening Academy, Hartford Hospital, and Habitat for Humanity.
Donation tiles
We donate tiles! One of our tile donation partners is the Beautiful Stuff Project in Somerville, MA. The Beautiful Stuff Project is an amazing organization that allows people of all ages to play and create art through the innovative reuse of materials. This partnership is so great because the organization is so close to our headquarters in Charlestown, MA. See some of the awesome projects created with Artaic’s donation tile below!
