DIY Indoors Out – Rooftop Renovation
Artaic teamed up with with Liquid Landscape Designs to help renovate the roof deck of Artaic’s CEO Ted Acworth, in Boston’s historic Beacon Hill neighborhood. The transformation process, which was filmed by the DIY channel for their television series “Indoors Out”, lasted only three days from start to finish, and the final design was stunning.
The rooftop design includes several 100% post-consumer recycled glass mosaic panels of varying sizes inlaid into the decking. The translucent panels are lit with LED lights from underneath, allowing the panels to emit an ethereal glow as the ambient light wanes.
The panels use StarQuartz and StarGlass urethane grout, which contains ground glass bead aggregate making the grout translucent – perfect for this backlit installation.
One of the panels installed in the corner of the deck supports a custom mosaic and reclaimed granite fountain created by Rock Art Studios. Water is pumped through the granite slab from a basin set below the deck line. It then seeps back under the tile surface through small holes hidden by river rocks. Due to the proximity of the project to Artaic’s office and production facility, the mosaics for the project we delivered on scooter by Artaic employees.
The mosaic panels, along with the rest of the materials for the renovation had to be carried four stories up a tight fire escape – which was no easy task, adding many additional hours of work needed to complete the renovation, resulting in the entire team working into the night. All of the hard work was definitely worth it in the end.
