One North of Boston
Duffy Design Group (DDG) takes a “boutique” approach to their multi-family development projects, tailoring their designs with custom touches that carry a consistent message throughout the building.
Artaic’s drive to create unique tile statements aligns perfectly with DDG’s design approach. Dennis Duffy had worked with Artaic on a standard mosaic installation and learned about our unique capabilities. As a creative thinker, he immediately began thinking about new and interesting ways to use the technology.
Tasked with creating an engaging space for the vast lobby of One North of Boston, a luxury apartment complex in Chelsea, MA, Duffy envisioned a series of large lanterns hanging in the space – each with a different backlit mosaic pattern. Artaic worked with Ayre Lighting and Bostik to bring the vision to life.

IDEA TO IMPLEMENTATION
Artaic loves working with designers who use Artaic as a platform for broader creative expression. Dennis Duffy of DDG is one of those designers.
He came to Artaic with the idea to incorporate massive mosaic lighting elements to add a unique visual and functional element to a high-ceilinged lobby.
Artaic worked closely with Duffy on the material, pattern and color palette – coordinating the tile with the other elements of the space.
COLLABORATIVE DESIGN & Fabrication
Artaic reached out to Ayre, an industry leader in custom energy efficient lighting, to fabricate the 6 cylindrical lanterns. The lights are all unique dimensions – the largest of which has a 6 ft diameter.
Lit with powerful LEDs, the fixtures are both aesthetic and functional – providing an alluring glow to the space as ambient light fades.
The lanterns were custom fabricated in North America with a transparent substrate strong enough to bear the weight of multiple sheets of 3/4″ vitreous glass tile.
Unique Installation Techniques & Materials
The tile sheets, produced by Artaic’s robotic fabrication system, were affixed to the cylindrical light fixtures using Artaic’s proprietary translucent adhesive.
For backlit projects like this, Artaic works with Bostik, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of adhesives and sealants, and their translucent Dimension Grout. The Bostik grout contains micro glass beads and a translucent, urethane binder that reflect light as well as allow it to pass through – blending the individual tiles into cohesive designs.
Due to the special nature of this project, the tile was installed in-house at Artaic’s production space in Boston, MA. The fixtures were then carefully crated and transported across Boston to be hung in the meticulously designed lobby at 100 Heard Street in Chelsea.
We take a very individual approach to
each design, incorporating features
that will make the project unique.
