Rashid Johnson’s “Broken Pavilion”
Artaic was honored to produce a hand cut mosaic designed by American contemporary artist Rashid Johnson for the Memorial Art Gallery’s Centennial Sculpture Park in Rochester, New York. The U-shaped mosaic sculpture wall, Broken Pavilion, is approximately 1,600 square feet and features Johnson’s iconic “Broken Men.”
The mosaic is comprised of thousands of hand cut pieces of glazed porcelain tile which come together to form a colorful and mesmerizing sculptural piece. The MAG’s Centennial Sculpture park is intended to be a space that promotes community engagement, cultural identity, and a sense of belonging; Rashid Johnson’s Broken Pavilion serves as a gathering point where these values of togetherness and community can flourish.
