There are no second chances for first impressions – and we’re not talking about people, we’re talking about making a splash with places and things! Our idea of a good first impression? It all starts at the front door, when you welcome people in. Entryways provide insight into the rest of your space, and set the tone for your guests’ experience. Here are our tips to ensure that your entryway is something that will leave its mark.
Be Engaging
Tile doesn’t have to just live on the floor, or the wall – think outside the box and create a cohesive space by utilizing multiple surfaces. Just like the sleek and chic waterfall islands that have been dominating design trends of late, carrying a tile design across planes is a sure-fire way to turn some heads in your space and provide your guests with plenty of eye candy.
Make Eye Contact
Think past the threshold, as you step through the doors you are looking ahead – create a feature wall that will draw your guests in, pulling them through your space in an effort to check out that fabulous design teasing them from across the room.
Find (Un)common Ground
Who says that carpets and area rugs are the only way to introduce color and pattern to your flooring? A beautiful mosaic floor-covering is hard to miss and hard to forget. Dress your floors with something that is not only breathtaking, but is easy to keep clean, and will give you a lifetime of durability. Now that’s what I call a win-win-win.
Dress to Impress
Think outside the box and hop on the statement lighting trend by dressing up your ceiling with some mosaic-clad fixtures. Just look at this installation, can you envision how different the space would feel if these drum pendants were bare?
Don’t Forget the Small Talk
Welcome people into your space by greeting them with something personal that resonates with you. Whether it be a logo or slogan in a commercial space, or a personal monogram or street address distinguishing your home from the rest – say it with mosaic!
Technical Talk Time: Threshold designs like the above are fabulous opportunities to explore our hand-cut and water-jet style of mosaic, which are available in our Natural Stone and Vitreous Glass tile types. Hand-cut mosaics are designed using traditional methods, where each tile is cut to shape, and grout-lines are irregular (we give our beloved robots a well-deserved break when we work on these beauties). Hand-cut mosaics are simply stunning, and channel that Old-World feel of the mosaics you would find strolling the streets of Lisbon, or exploring ancient Greece and Rome. These types of mosaics are great for smaller areas where you want to pack in a lot of definition with typography, decorative flourishes and borders. My favorite aspect of our hand-cut mosaics? We can incorporate brass and stainless steel into the designs! Want to match your interior finishes? Add a brass border! Want a subtle way to mix-metals in your space? We have got you covered!
Be Yourself
One of my favorite quotes is by Oscar Wilde, who said, “Be yourself, because everyone else is taken.” When thinking about your entryway, have fun with it, let it set the tone, and make it unequivocally yours! With that said, nothing says unique like a custom mosaic. It’s a simple way to create a memorable environment for all those who enter the space.
