Kitchen Resolutions
by Ariel Schuster, Residential Design Consultant at Artaic
Our New Year’s resolution? Give our spaces the attention they need to uplift us as we enter 2021 and leave 2020 in the dust, where it belongs (I’m picturing the makeover montage scene from The Breakfast Club).
The 2020 homebody-lifestyle brought out the Ina Garten and Julia Child in many of us as we explored new, oftentimes previously untapped, culinary skills. The kitchen became a refuge, soothing and entertaining us day to night with coffee (maybe too much), banana bread, sourdough, and lets not forget how it brought out the mixologist in all of us. With kitchens taking center stage in the home, the design-world is already seeing a trend in revamping these spaces – here are a few trends already gaining traction in 2021…
Statement Backsplashes
The white cabinet trend is getting less attention as punchy cabinet colors are taking center stage in kitchens for 2021. It makes sense, we spend a decent amount of time in the kitchen – it’s where we start our mornings, and in 2021 we want to wake up happy! What better way to complement your cabinets (or juxtapose them) and liven up your space than with a bold, bright backsplash.
Three-Toned Spaces
Another big trend we’re seeing in 2021 is the move from two-toned kitchens to three-toned, because everyone needs a little more color and fun in the New Year. This is a great opportunity to pair two of the more neutral tones in the kitchen or gather spaces (think metallic fixtures, stone countertops) and mix in a brighter color for a nice pop!
Eye Catching Islands
Maybe you love the clean look of sleek white cabinetry and all this talk of punchy cabinets for 2021 isn’t your schtick – no shame in your game! But who says that cabinets are your only opportunity to feature color in a kitchen? Think below-eye level – kitchen islands are sure to make a more subtle statement while still adding interest to your space.
Moody Hues
Looking to add drama and touch of luxe to your space without introducing a color that might dominate the rest of your decor? Deep, rich, moody colors like Sherwin Williams Color of the Year ‘Urbane Bronze’ are trending for 2021. These tones are sure to pair beautifully with metallic fixtures and textured wood flooring.
Aqua Pura
If you tend to shy away from explosions of color, breathe new life into your space by opting for a more subtle pattern that you might find in nature. 2021 is all about bringing the outside-in as we stave off cabin fever and appreciate our connection with the outdoors more. The best part about biophilic design? It can be geared towards any design aesthetic from modern to traditional. See more thoughts about Aqua Pura here.
One of our New Year’s resolutions is to make our surroundings more beautiful – why not start in the kitchen? Add a beautiful mosaic for inspiration in anticipation for brighter days ahead.
