Artistic Intelligence
When Ted Acworth was building his Boston-area home more than a decade ago, he looked into incorporating tile installations in the bathrooms, kitchen and patio that were similar to the beautiful ancient mosaics he had encountered at Roman archeological sites. Yet he found the process of commissioning an original mosaic installation too complicated, time-consuming and expensive. This sparked the mechanical engineer’s interest in designing a solution. Acworth began exploring the idea of bringing modern technological production techniques, along with the latest artistic concepts, to the ancient art form of mosaic-making. In 2007, he launched Artaic to make the mosaic medium more accessible to consumers. Sophisticated design software and innovative robotic assembly systems are utilized to create artful, intricate mosaics through fast design iterations and American robotic production. Artaic’s first robot, Arty, was born in 2009. As Artaic has continually improved its unique process and technology, Arty has been joined by several brothers and sisters, including Arnold, Bertha and Artemis. Clearly, they are an extremely talented bunch.
