Artist Feature: Abby Carroll, SMMA
“Art to me, in the form of painting or crafting, is my escape,” shares Abby Carroll, winner of Artaic’s first Artist Feature and an interior designer at SMMA in Cambridge.
“When I’m painting, a different part of who I am takes center-stage and I let everything else go in that moment,” says Abby. She shares that as an interior designer, creativity requires essential technical and practical skills to get the job done. Safety and efficiency are both just as important as creating an aesthetically appealing space. Abby takes inspiration from her architectural projects to use in her personal creative outlet – painting, and vice versa.
Abby created these two featured oil paintings for the IIDA charity auction, Art Uncorked. Drawing inspiration from a farm-themed restaurant she designed in 2017, she painted two whimsical portraits of farm animals, using large exploratory brush strokes and a colorful palette.
More than ever, designers are discovering new ways to draw inspiration from their personal artwork for their professional projects. Abby created beautiful imagery that would make a stunning mural in a space. But, hand painting a giant cow in a restaurant isn’t the most practical medium. This is why Artaic provides the perfect solution for artists, designers, and anyone with a vision.
Using modern technology, such as Artaic’s Tylist™ software and robotic manufacturing, designers are able to input an original image and turn it into a one-of-a-kind custom mosaic mural. To further explore this concept, we’ve taken Abby’s original oil paintings and uploaded them into Tylist to create the mosaic using our newest line of 1” Glazed Porcelain. We envisioned her cows as part of an organic restaurant of some kind, so we rendered them onto the walls of a cafe.
We think the result is a fun and remarkable statement. What do you think? Perhaps you would like to envision your own photography, drawings, or oil paintings in the mosaic medium. Just send your entry our way to have your artwork rendered into mosaic, and maybe be next month’s feature.
